Hi everyone! Today is officially day 12 in A Love for Books event! Hope everyone is enjoying the features! Today I have a special guest participating! My blogging BFF Meredith from Pandora's Books! Her blog is all around amazing and her friendship has come to mean so much to me! I can promise you blogging wouldn't be nearly as fun if I wasn't friends with her like I am! Now she put together a pretty cool post if I may so about book boys, them in the books versus them in their movie adaption form.
When a young adult novel is adapted for film, one of the biggest concerns fans have is the casting. Every single reader has their own idea of what their beloved characters look like and no one wants to have those images ripped away from them. Sometimes, the casting seems perfect and readers are overjoyed. But other times, the casting ruffles feathers among the fandom.
Today, I’m going to compare some of our favorite book boyfriends to their movie counter-parts. I’ve read the majority of the books mentioned and I’ve seen their movies, but I’ve also included a handful that haven’t released yet.
Harry Potter: I’ve read all the Harry Potter Books and I’ve seen all the movies and I must say, the casting was amazing all around! But since I’m only discussing the yummy boys, I’ll start with my favorite: Oliver Wood. Sean Biggerstaff did an AMAZING job. He looks the part, he sounds the part (his accent had me swooning!) and I was deeply saddened that he was only in two of the films.
Now, of course, we can’t talk about Harry Potter without discussing Harry and Ron. For me, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint absolutely personified their characters in looks, in acting – all around, really. I didn’t like when Daniel’s hair was short, though, because the books always describe Harry’s hair as long-ish and messy and Daniel didn’t even look good with shorter hair. Also, let’s talk about how he has Lily’s green eyes... *Sarcasm*
A couple other notable mentions are Fred, George and Neville. I think we can all agree that the actors absolutely met our expectations! (If you don’t agree.. Well, we can’t be friends anymore. Just kidding! Maybe..)
Twilight: It’s hard to discuss Twilight and the casting without getting ranty. This was NOT my favorite movie adaption by any means. I know I’m discussing the guys here, but I have to stop and say that Kristen Stewart was AWFUL as Bella. She can’t act. She just can’t. That said, I’ll move on to the topic at hand. Robert Pattison did NOT live up to my expectations as Edward. In the books, I liked Edward – for the most part. And though Robert did an excellent job as Cedric in Harry Potter, his acting in Twilight was sketchy at best. He got a little better in Eclipse, but he still just wasn’t Edward.
Jacob, though... That’s a different story! I LOVED Taylor Lautner as Jacob. He did a really great job and he looked the part! We’ll forget about that unfortunate wig in New Moon... But otherwise, I loved him. Plus, let’s not forget how hard he worked to keep his role in New Moon! He’s dedicated, that’s for sure. Honestly, in the books, I always wanted Bella to end up with Edward. But in the movies? I’m totally Team Jacob!
Finally, I want give a quick-shout-out to Billy Burke as Charlie. He may be older than me, but he’s hot and funny and he EXCEEDED my expectations!
The Hunger Games: I want to preface this one by saying I did NOT enjoy the books... I love the movies! But the books fell completely flat for me. That being said, in the books, I’m Team No One. I can’t stand Gale or Peeta. They were boring, dull and just did nothing for me. However, Josh Hutchinson and Liam Hemsworth were PERFECT in their roles. Honestly, Josh was my favorite. He really breathed life into Peeta!
Beautiful Creatures: While Beautiful Creatures wasn’t the best movie adaption, I was fairly pleased with the casting choices. Alden Ehrenreich definitely looks the part of Ethan. One thing that really annoyed me, though, was his voice... Is that stupid? Well, even if it is, it still bugged me. His accent sounded fake and forced. I cringed whenever he opened his mouth.
On the flip side, I loved Thomas Mann as Link and Kyle Gallner as Larkin. They both looked the part and their acting was great!
Vampire Academy: I’m a huge, huge fan of Vampire Academy. I was so excited when I first heard it was going to become a movie. As for the cast.. Well, Dimitri is an extremely swoon-worthy character and I’m just not feeling that casting choice. I mean, " Danila Kozlovsky isn’t terrible – it could have been worse. But he looks older than I pictured Dimitri (And yes, I know he’s SUPPOSED to be older, but still...) and – Okay, yes, I’m petty – his hair is shorter than I pictured Dimitri’s. I mean, I haven’t seen the movie yet, so maybe his acting will sway me. But right now, I’m not sold on this one.
My favorite male casting choice for Vampire Academy? Cameron Monaghan as Mason. Perfect! Love! Almost exactly as I pictured him!
Divergent: I know Divergent won’t be out for a few more weeks, but it’s a highly anticipated movie adaption and I’m pretty excited for it! Theo James was born to play Four. I always had trouble picturing Four when I read the books. I couldn’t really get a good grasp on him in my mind. But when Theo was revealed as Four? Perfection.
If I Stay: It’s been a long time since I read If I Stay and I haven’t read its sequel. But the second I saw Jamie Blackley, I knew he was Adam. Like Theo James in Divergent, Jamie was born to play Adam. I don’t remember how exactly I pictured Adam when I read the book, but I do know that Jamie IS Adam. Period. End of discussion.
Fallen: I had a lot of trouble deciding if I wanted to include Fallen in this list. When I originally read the book, I really enjoyed it. Looking back on it.. Let’s just say, if I were to read it now, as a blogger, I’d probably be more critical of certain things. But I DID love Cam and Daniel – mostly Cam. I have a thing for the bad boy in the love triangle!
So... It was just announced recently that Fallen would become a movie. I just looked the cast up on IMDB for the first time. And... All I can say is, I REALLY hope hair and make-up will make all the difference. Because right now, if I were to rank the casting choices in this list, I’d say the actors chosen for Daniel and Cam are THE WORST. They look NOTHING like what I pictured. I mean... I know that can happen a lot with these things. But as of right now, I’m just cringing and twitching. The guy playing Cam looks like a baby! He looks like he’s 14-years-old! I just can’t...
So there you have it. Those are my thoughts on some of the most recent/most popular/highly anticipated YA novel movie adaptions and what I think of our sexy book boyfriends versus their movie counterpart.
Now tell me: Do you agree with the above? Do you disagree? Tell me why! Also, talk to me about movies that I didn’t include! What do you think of Jace in City of Bones? Gus in The Fault in Our Stars? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
What did you guys think? I personally agree with a lot of the points she made! In fact, just tonight because of her I found out If I Stay was turning into a movie! I knew Fallen was but I didn't know they picked a cast yet! I must go look for myself (though I'm kind of nervous to now. Yikes!) I hope you enjoyed today's feature and if you haven't already, stop by Mer's blog! It's truly amazing!

I get terrified when I see that a favorite book is being adapted. The casting is huge and is typically never done correctly (imo). It would be impossible for one person to fulfill an entire fan-base but typically I'm never pleased :-( I love this post idea! There have been so many adaptations as of late it's fun to look at the majority of them.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I wasn't crazy about The Hunger Games books....but the movies are SO good! I am always so worried with books I like being turned into movies, because too often they don't do a good job.
ReplyDeleteCan City of Heavenly Fire be included in the preorder deal?
