Review: Of Triton
Book: Of Triton by Anna Banks
Publication Date: May 28, 2013
Series: The Syrena Legacy (#2)
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Synopsis: Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half- Breeds should be put to death.
As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?
Overall Review:
After falling head over heels with Of Poseidon I just knew I had to read Of Triton right after, I started and didn't put it down until I finished 3 and a half hours later. Just like Of Poseidon, Of Triton was impossible to put down and I never wanted it to end. Of Poseidon ended with a little bit of a cling hanger and right away in Of Triton we're thrown into the action of said cliffhanger. After that Of Triton never slows down until the very end. Of Triton definitely deals more with the Syrena people and their political system which I thought was very interesting to read about, even if I thought the Syrena's were way too gullible and sometimes idiotic. There's definitely some action going on, just not the violent kind. More of the plotting against one another, riots, and temporary revolutions. There were tons of things I never expected to happen and some things that I did but they all blended together nicely that it didn't matter that sometimes the story was far too predictable. Anna Banks has done it again with her fun and somewhat witty writing, her compelling yet highly entertaining storytelling, and her hilarious yet lovely characters all of which you simply can't help but adore! This is such a great series that I can't believe I waited so long to read, and the release for Of Neptune simply can't come fast enough!
Emma hasn't changed much since Of Poseidon, not that I really expected her to. She was still stubborn beyond belief, head strong, and very driven to be with Galen. That being said, she wasn't a fan of everyone going back to the two kingdoms. It left her alone for one thing but despite the fact that everyone she loves is Syrena and prefer to be in their mermaid form under water, she wanted everyone to stay above the water and stay with her. She thought it'd be better for everyone if they ignore the problems with the Syrena and pretend to be human. I don't think it's because she didn't care what happened to the Syrena people but she was more concerned about herself and the ones she loved at the moment to think about anything else. She's been through a lot, she's lost a lot, and she's definitely been going through a tough time and I think that got to her on a level that she wanted to gather all her friends and family up, lock them away, and keep them away from the world so nobody could hurt them or take them away from her. It definitely clouded her judgment at times but she had the best intentions at heart.
Galen was a whole lot more open for some things but narrow minded for others. He didn't hate humans like he did in Of Triton but he thought that everyone in Syrena should be happy with the way things are and not expect anything different than what they've got. in Triton's kingdom he's royalty and I think once he's back to being royalty he's goes into this spoiled child attitude. He gets somethings aren't right or wrong but he demands respect, obedience, and everyone to just follows orders that have been set for hundreds of years. Unless of course those rules have anything to do with him and Emma, then they're stupid rules. Again with the spoiled child attitude, he thinks unless the rules apply to him and stop him from doing something then all the rules should be followed by everyone. Part of the reason I think he was so grumpy at the Triton kingdom was because he missed Emma and wanted to be with her more than he wanted to deal with dumb Syrena politics. I just want to say that Emma and Galen are much better characters when they're together than when they're apart, which amazes me because most of the time it's the other way around!
There wasn't as much romance in Of Triton because Emma and Galen were separated most of the time and there were much more important things going on. The romance that was there was just as good as it was in Of Poseidon because Emma and Galen are so cute together! Now that they're officially together there wasn't that romantic tension between the two of them like there was in Of Poseidon which made me happy because all that tension got to me. When they're together they're pretty much attached at the hip, kissing and hugging and snuggling nonstop. I truly think they love each other and it's very obvious in their thoughts and behavior, when they're together and not. I seriously can't handle all their adorableness!
The pace was once again pretty fast and I flew right through this book! I couldn't for the life of me put it down and I finished Of Triton in a matter of hours. Of Triton focused more on the Syrena and the kingdom politics which I thought was really interesting to read about. I liked learning more about the Syrena, while I learned they were just a tad bit too gullible and to me seemed to love to get into arguments. They were a very indecisive people who never quite seemed satisfied with anything. There's tons of action, in terms of arguments and rising against the system, and suspense! Of Triton was such a light, fun, and entertaining read just as Of Poseidon was. I seriously wonder why I waited so long to read this series because I really enjoyed it! Of Neptune can't get here fast enough! Emma and Galen are much better together than they are apart, and they spend most of this book apart so it kind of bugged me a bit. Emma wasn't a fan of the Syrena people, not because she just hated them for no reason, but because she wanted all her friends and family to stay on land with her and pretend to be human forever. She didn't exactly fit in with the Syrena so instead of her living there, she wanted everyone to live with her and that be the end of it. She's been through a lot so I get that she's protective but still, her protectiveness really clouded her judgment. She had the best intentions for those she cared about but it got to be a bit much. Same with Galen. He was so focused on being with Emma that he didn't really care about anything else. Or anyone else for that matter. He was a bit of a spoiled child while with the Syrena, since he's royalty, and it was real annoying. He felt the rules should apply to everyone but him if they prevent him from getting what he wants. He's very narrow minded when it comes to the Syrena and it got to be a bit much, like with Emma. It's so much better when they're together because not only are they freaking adorable together but because they're a whole lot more likable together than a part. I seriously love this cover. The blues and how it all blends together. Simply gorgeous!
Overall Rating:
I give Of Triton a 4 out of 5 star rating. I really adored reading Of Triton and it went by far too fast for my tastes! I never wanted it to end because it was so good! I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes mermaids stories or wants to try them out. If you like adorable romances then you'll love Galen and Emma. This is a really addicting series and they'll fly by, I promise! I hope the wait for Of Neptune goes by fast! Thanks for reading!
4/5 stars
